In the meantime, we’ve put together a list of six interesting things about Sacramento to give you something to look forward too!
1. Ride on Old Trains Restored by the California State Railroad Museum
If you have an interest in early industry, the railroad, or just like learning a bit about history, stop in at the California State Railroad Museum. With 21 restored locomotives from the old steam-powered engine to more modern diesel engines, the museum has a range of technology on display. Some of these trains are still working, and you can even purchase tickets for Excursion Train Rides on six miles of the Sacramento Southern Railroad!
2. Visit the Hidden Underground World of the Original City of Sacramento
Back in the 1860s and 70s, Sacramento raised the entire city up on jacks and structural supports to solve the problems of recurrent flooding. This essentially created an underground tunnel system with parts of old old streets and buildings remaining intact. You can still see these spooky places for yourself these days. The Sacramento History Museum offers regular tours of the underground to allow visitors the opportunity to see the old city in a safe, guided manner.
3. Eat a Donut Bacon Burger at the California State Fair
Every summer the California State Fair draws thousands of visitors and vendors to the city. This fair is known for extreme events and food, along with plenty of agricultural displays. Get your fill of adventurous flavors by trying some of the more unusual offerings, such as the donut bacon burger, an ice cream topped churro dog, or deep-fried bacon-wrapped Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.
4. Tour the World During a Lantern Festival
Each winter the Global Winter Wonderland Festival puts on a magnificent lights display for guests. Each year is a different theme with moving lantern displays that represent different cultures around the world. The festival also includes laser lights displays, entertainers, ice skating, and carnival rides. Even your local Sacramento moving company is dazzled by these beautiful displays!
5. Get Your Drink On While Pedaling a Bike Bus!
See Sacramento’s downtown in a new way by arranging a tour on the original Off the Chain Bike Bus. This unique mode of transportation is an open-air bus powered by pedaling. Everyone works together to go on a pub crawl, tour of the holiday lights, or enjoy the local cuisine at a few area restaurants.
6. Go Explore Redwood Forests a Few Hours Away
While not in Sacramento, you can’t spend time in California without seeing the Redwood Forests. These giant trees can reach over one thousand years of age and grow hundreds of feet tall. They are truly an impressive sight for visitors and those living in the region. Make a day trip out to the Muir Woods National Monument just north of San Francisco to see one of the last old-growth coastal stands. Or, you can head in the opposite direction towards Calaveras Big Trees State Park to see some Giant Sequoias.
